FLinse & Co. is Düsseldorf’s first package free shop, providing the residents of Düsseldorf a place to buy staple items without producing packaging waste. Owner Christina Rah noticed in particular how much plastic packaging she was using at work and in her daily life, and after reading the book Besser Leben ohne Plastik she took a seminar on how to open up a package free shop of her own.
How does it work?
It’s simple. Bring empty containers from home, weight them at one of the scales provided, then fill your containers. Easy Peasy. (everything is priced by weight with the weight of your container to be subtracted from the total cost)
Do they have organic products?
Yes, the shop is full of organic options and where possible products are sourced locally.
What kind of items can be found there?
Pasta, rice, cereal, grains, dried fruit, spices & herbs, oil, vinegar, maple syrup, teas, sugar, flour, coffee beans, candies, cakes, cookies, beans, nuts & more.
Oh ya, and did I mention they have quinoa grown right here in NRW?
So why shop package free?
As of 2015 in Germany the amount of plastic waste produced per person, per year on average was 37 KG (6kg more then the EU average). Buying package free not only significantly reduces the amount of waste you produce as an individual but also allows you to buy only you need, cutting back on food waste as well.
